who|ev|er

who|ev|er
who|ev|er «hoo EHV uhr», pronoun.
1. any person that; who: »

Whoever wants the book may have it.

2. no matter who: »

Whoever else goes hungry, he won't.

3. Informal. (as an interrogative pronoun implying perplexity or surprise) who: »

Whoever could have done such a dreadful thing?

Usage a In standard, written English whoever and whomever are used as subject and object respectively. In informal, spoken English, whoever, like who, frequently serves as either subject or object. b In They gave tickets to whoever requested them, the whole clause whoever requested them is the object of to and whoever is the subject of requested. In sentences of this type, whomever is sometimes substituted because of the mistaken notion that it is required by the preceding preposition.
